MANILA The head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, will cut short a visit to Asia to attend a crucial Eurogroup meeting in Brussels next week amid divisions with European leaders over how Greece can reduce its debts. “The managing director will participate in the eurogroup meeting on November 20 as she usually does and that will mean shortening her current trip to Asia,” IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said on Thursday. Disagreement over how to shrink Greece’s debt unexpectedly flared into the open last week during a news conference in Brussels when Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the eurogroup of [...]

BEIJING China’s sovereign wealth fund will focus more of its $ 482 billion firepower on Asia in twin bids to beat a rise in protectionism in the West and boost exposure to rapid regional growth, chairman and chief executive Lou Jiwei said. The man charged with stewardship of a slice of the world’s largest store of foreign wealth lauded the British approach to overseas investment in public sector projects as one for the world to follow and said the policy response to Europe’s debt crisis was a reason to stay underweight bonds and stocks there. “There is a rise in [...]

LOS ANGELES Asian markets traded lower Friday morning, taking cues from losses on Wall Street and elsewhere over concerns about the U.S. “fiscal cliff” and Europe’s debt crisis. Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average lost 0.9%, South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.1%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gave up 0.5%, the Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.1%, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 traded 0.4% lower. Many of the market moved off their session lows, however, after Chinese consumer price data showed inflation lower than expected in October, suggesting more room for the People’s Bank of China to ease policy further. Among notable movers, Tokyo-listed Trend [...]

SYDNEY Apple fans lined up in several Asian cities to get their hands on the iPad mini on Friday, but the device, priced above rival gadgets from Google and Amazon.com, attracted smaller crowds than at the company’s previous global rollouts. Apple Inc’s global gadget rollouts are typically high-energy affairs drawing droves of buyers who stand in line for hours. But a proliferation of comparable rival devices may have sapped some interest. About 50 people waited for the Apple store in Sydney, Australia, to open, where in the past the line had stretched for several blocks when the company debuted new [...]

Japan and its Asian neighbors need to look for “alternative engines of growth” as exports to Europe and the United States have slowed, said Federal Reserve Vice-Chair Janet Yellen on Thursday. “It would be desirable, both for the region and for the global economy, if emerging Asia were able to rely…more on a fundamental rebalancing of growth toward domestic demand,” Yellen said in a speech prepared for delivery to the Institute of International Finance meeting in Tokyo. U.S. officials have worn a path to Asia in recent years asking the region to boost consumer spending. Turning to Japan, Yellen said [...]

China’s economic growth is expected to weaken to 7.8 percent this year, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday as it warned of risks to emerging Asia if the euro zone crisis worsens and the United States does not avoid its “fiscal cliff”. However, the IMF said several Asian countries had fiscal room to support their economies if needed and it reiterated a long-standing view that some regional countries, including China, have weaker currencies than desirable. The IMF sharply lowered its forecasts for India and predicted “less buoyant” growth in the near- and medium-term for Asia as a whole, cautioning [...]
