HONG KONG Chinese media on Thursday reported that Vice President Xi Jinping made his first public communication on his activities in nearly two weeks, in a move that appears designed to quell speculation over his whereabouts. The Guangxi Daily newspaper said Xi, widely tipped to become China’s next president, had “expressed condolences on the death of old party comrade Huang Rong,” according to a report by AFP. The communication was the first by Xi since Sept. 1. The Chinese newspaper said Huang Rong died on Sept. 6, which would have been a day after Xi missed a planned meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to AFP.
