NEW YORK Lockheed Martin Corp and the Defense Department are nearing agreement on a long-delayed contract for a fifth batch of F-35 fighter jets, the Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer told Reuters on Wednesday. “I think we’re getting close,” Defense Undersecretary Frank Kendall told Reuters after a speech to an investor conference hosted by Credit Suisse. Kendall said he had “a very positive meeting” on Tuesday with Lockheed President Marillyn Hewson about a range of issues, including the $ 396 billion F-35 program, the Pentagon’s largest weapons program. Lockheed, the Pentagon’s largest contractor, and its suppliers are already building the fifth [...]
Students waiting until their senior year to start their job hunt are putting themselves at a disadvantage in the current frail job market. A recent study by Millennial Branding and StudentAdvisor.com shows that students are not aggressively preparing for their post-college careers during their time on campus making their job search even more difficult after graduation. The study results show that although 85% of students surveyed consider internships important to their future career prospects, only one-third have a presence on LinkedIn, a key networking tool for connecting with internship opportunities. Only one in nine student respondents have an online [...]
AMSTERDAM It may be decades before debt levels in the euro zone drop below the EU limit of 60 percent of economic output, but states should still aim to beat that target, European Central Bank policymaker Klaas Knot said on Monday. The currency bloc needed a strong authority to enforce a reduction of debt levels, Knot, who also heads the Dutch central bank, said. His downbeat assessment of how long it might be before states again met the standards on debt they had to adhere to when they joined the single currency added to a growing debate about whether those [...]
A College Education Overseas With the cost of a U.S. education booming, it might make sense for American students to do what Fortune 500 companies do when they encounter a cost they don’t like: Outsource it. According to the Department of Education, the average undergraduate tuition at a four-year institution in the U.S. rose from $ 12,922 in the 2000-2001 school year (in today’s dollars) to $ 21,189 for 2009-2010. Many top American universities are even more expensive, reaching upward of $ 50,000 a year in total costs. “The cost of American higher education continues to grow at a very [...]
Incoming college freshmen have the opportunity to start fresh, shed high school stereotypes and labels and reinvent their identity by getting involved in activities on campus with various organizations, programs and groups. Signing up for extracurricular activities on campus is one of the best ways for new students to make connections with other students and find those with common interests or values, says Sally Rubenstone, senior advisor at College Confidential. “For freshmen who worry about homesickness, activities can provide a distraction–hopefully a fun and interesting one that can help make a strange place feel more familiar fast,” she says. With [...]
We’re told over and over again that women are too reticent, too lacking in confidence, too timid to ask for a raise. But we are asking. And we have proof. We found four real women who negotiated for raises, and got them. These aren’t career coaches or hiring managers–they’re just ambitious, conscientious women like we are, who made things happen for themselves. Please note: Names have been changed to protect those who shared their successes—and prevent them from encountering any awkward situations at work. Remember, if they can do it, you can, too. Dear Cashing In, I’m an employer for a small, specialty insurance company, with nine salespeople who travel extensively. What airline/hotel credit card programs are there to maximize my benefits, while at the same time, giving me good opportunity to share the perks with my salespeople (especially the high producers)? – Sven S. Dear Sven, You’re right that c Whatever you choose, make sure it’s suited for the kind of travel your business requires [...]
