Opening their doors and offering sales on Thanksgiving did more than give retailers an early start to the holiday shopping season – the holiday actually may have drawn more shoppers than “Black Friday.” Thirty percent of Americans surveyed in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll said they shopped either online or in stores this past Thanksgiving Day, slightly more than shopped on the day after, which is typically the biggest shopping day of the year. Of those who said that they shopped in stores on Thanksgiving, it was the first time for nearly one-third of respondents, suggesting that moving sales events into […]

Even people living outside the U.S. caught the Black Friday fever this year, and the frenzy will only intensify in years to come as the world becomes more tech-savvy and America’s retail culture continues to globalize.  With the global e-commerce market set to surpass $ 1 trillion over the next few years and more consumers in other countries coming online, American retailers have started pushing holiday promotions across U.S. borders in an effort to reach the still largely untapped market. Online spending among international consumers more than tripled on Black Friday weekend compared with an average day, while the number […]

NEW YORK Retail foot traffic between Thursday and Sunday rose 8.4% to more than 594 million store visits, signaling retailers’ earlier promotions and longer store openings may have paid off in the kick off of the holiday season sales on Black Friday weekend, ShopperTrak said on Tuesday. In another positive note, retail sales also rose 2.7% to $ 22 billion from $ 21.4 billion last year even though Friday sales were down. The four-day weekend last year represented 8.6% of the total industry holiday sales in November and December last year. ShopperTrak said traffic also rose Monday through Wednesday before […]

NEW YORK Retail stocks fell on Monday after data showed Black Friday sales dipped despite an increase in store traffic. Mall traffic tracker ShopperTrak said on Saturday retail sales decreased 1.8% on Friday, the biggest traffic and sales day of the holiday season, despite a 3.5% increase in retail foot traffic. Teen retailer Aeropostale Inc. fell 5.5% after Janney cut its rating on the stock to neutral from buy, adding improvement at its rival Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and strong product acceptance at American Eagle Outfitters Inc. could shift spending away from the company. Amazon.com Inc. and Best Buy Co. […]

Despite millions of Americans still facing significant problems with unemployment and debt, experts expect spending to increase this holiday season compared to last year. Holiday spending increased 4.1% from 2010 to 2011, but consumers should be careful not get caught up in the hype and start the new year saddled with debt. To keep holiday costs down, consumers need to create holiday budget strategies that help them save – and they should start with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. These massive spending days offer consumers valuable savings on holiday gifts and other purchases, but it’s easy to fall into the […]

An Unapologetic Black Friday

As you read this, I am likely in a big fat American mall. I know if I want to claim my piece of the moral high ground I should be lying through my teeth and saying I’m strolling my town and shopping at its local businesses. Ho ho ho. But not so fast on this holier-than-thou tone that seems to be all the rage regarding Black Friday. Oh, those shallow wretches duking it out for the toy of the moment at some mammoth department store. How could they be thankful for the air they breathe one day and muscling some […]

It can be easy to get swept into the buying frenzy among the doorbuster deals, neon discount signs and only-for-a-few-hours sales on Black Friday, but consumers need to remember that just because a product is advertised as being on sale doesn’t make it a good deal. “Black Friday is a day to create a list, do your research and form a budget and stick to it….the holidays are not a time to create a budget war in your house,” says Leslie Linevsky, co-founder of online catalog company Experts note that retailers promote deals and organize displays to lure shoppers to […]
