SAN FRANCISCO Facebook Inc. is considering buying Microsoft Corp.’s Atlas Solutions ad platform, the AllThingsD blog reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources. The report said Facebook is looking into a possible deal, as part of a plan to set up its own ad network geared to third-party Web sites. No financial terms were mentioned in the report. A company representative said the company does not comment on rumors or speculation. Shares of Facebook were last trading down 2.7% to $ 26.95.

Rebounding social-networking giant Facebook (FB) has been tapped to join the Nasdaq 100 next week, replacing outgoing IT services firm Infosys (INFY). Shares of Mark Zuckerberg’s tech company rallied nearly 2% in premarket action in response to the news. Nasdaq OMX Group (NDAQ) said late Tuesday that Facebook will be added to the Nasdaq 100 on December 12, joining an index that tracks the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq. With a market cap just shy of $ 60 billion, Facebook had been the largest Nasdaq-listed company not already in the Nasdaq 100. Facebook is replacing Infosys, India’s […]

Online social networks like Facebook and Twitter let you revive old relationships, share musings on current events and tell acquaintances about everything from your new job promotion to the cute thing your dog did. Unfortunately, the ease of sharing information can lead some people to reveal too much. (Do you really need a daily update on the gastrointestinal upset of someone you barely know?) But the danger of over-revelation leads beyond mere social faux pas. More than half of adults who use online social networks post information that puts them at risk of cybercrime, including fraudulent credit card use, says […]

VIENNA Facebook privacy campaign group europe-v-facebook plans to go to court in Ireland a bid to make the world’s biggest social network do more to protect the privacy of its hundreds of millions of members, it said on Tuesday. The Austrian student group has been campaigning for better data protection by Facebook for more than a year and has won some concessions on users’ control of their own data and transparency on the part of Facebook over the data it collects and stores. “We are hoping for a legally compliant solution from the Irish data protection authority,” the group said. […]

VIENNA An Austrian student group plans to sue Facebook Inc, the world’s biggest social network, for failing to do enough to protect the privacy of its hundreds of millions of members. Privacy campaign group europe-v-facebook, which has been lobbying for better data protection by Facebook for over a year, said on Tuesday it planned to sue the U.S. company in Ireland, where it has its international headquarters. The move is one of a number of campaigns against the giants of the internet, which are under pressure from investors to generate more revenue from their huge user bases but which also […]

TEL AVIV Facebook Inc., the Menlo Park, Calif., social-media firm, is discussing the prospect of acquiring WhatsApp, the cross-platform mobile-messaging application, TechCrunch reported on Sunday, citing sources close to the matter. The website said that for Facebook, acquiring WhatsApp would be another connection to mobile consumers, a strategy that Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, has said is critical to the company’s growth.

Despite changes announced last night in its contract with Zynga (ZNGA) that allows Facebook (FB) to develop its own games, the social network run by Mark Zuckerberg says it has no plans to jump into the burgeoning business. “We’re not in the business of building games and we have no plans to do so,” a Facebook spokesperson said. “We’re focused on being the platform where games and apps are built.” A source close to the matter told Business the clause in the addendum that gives Facebook the right to develop games was more a legal item, rather than a major […]

SAN FRANCISCO Zynga Inc. saw its battered stock take another spill Thursday afternoon after the company issued a filing showing some changes to its relationship with Facebook Inc. — among them that the social network will be able to develop its own games if it chooses to. Zynga shares slid more than 12% to $ 2.30 in after-hours trades. In the filing, Zynga said it is no longer obligated to use Facebook’s credits system to handle payments for games offered on its own Zynga.com platform. But any of Zynga’s games offered on that platform – with a few exceptions – […]

Facebook Inc could now develop its own games for its platform as part of a new agreement reached with Zynga Inc, the largest publisher of games on Facebook, according to regulatory filings from the two companies Thursday. Under the new agreement, Zynga could elect not to use Facebook’s payments mechanism to collect revenue or display Facebook’s ads. The two social Internet companies, which went public within seven months of each other, have been intimately tied. In recent quarters fees from Zynga have constituted more than 15 percent of Facebook’s total revenues.
