Online social networks like Facebook and Twitter let you revive old relationships, share musings on current events and tell acquaintances about everything from your new job promotion to the cute thing your dog did. Unfortunately, the ease of sharing information can lead some people to reveal too much. (Do you really need a daily update on the gastrointestinal upset of someone you barely know?) But the danger of over-revelation leads beyond mere social faux pas. More than half of adults who use online social networks post information that puts them at risk of cybercrime, including fraudulent credit card use, says […]

The Austrian student group has been campaigning for better data protection by Facebook for more than a year and has won some concessions on users’ control of their own data and transparency on the part of Facebook over the data it collects and stores. “We are hoping for a legally compliant solution from the Irish data protection authority,” the group said. Despite changes announced last night in its contract with Zynga (ZNGA) that allows Facebook (FB) to develop its own games, the social network run by Mark Zuckerberg says it has no plans to jump into the burgeoning business. “We’re not in the business of building games and we have no plans to do so,” a Facebook spokesperson said. “We’re focused on being the platform where games and apps are built.” A source close to the matter told Business the clause in the addendum that gives Facebook the right to develop games was more a legal item, rather than a major […]
SAN FRANCISCO Zynga Inc. saw its battered stock take another spill Thursday afternoon after the company issued a filing showing some changes to its relationship with Facebook Inc. — among them that the social network will be able to develop its own games if it chooses to. Zynga shares slid more than 12% to $ 2.30 in after-hours trades. In the filing, Zynga said it is no longer obligated to use Facebook’s credits system to handle payments for games offered on its own Zynga.com platform. But any of Zynga’s games offered on that platform – with a few exceptions – […]
Facebook Inc could now develop its own games for its platform as part of a new agreement reached with Zynga Inc, the largest publisher of games on Facebook, according to regulatory filings from the two companies Thursday. Under the new agreement, Zynga could elect not to use Facebook’s payments mechanism to collect revenue or display Facebook’s ads. The two social Internet companies, which went public within seven months of each other, have been intimately tied. In recent quarters fees from Zynga have constituted more than 15 percent of Facebook’s total revenues.
