Merging six trade and commerce agencies into one will help U.S. businesses export more and grow the economy, said President Barack Obama on Friday. Obama is requesting authority from Congress to merge the agencies, including the Commerce Department, to save businesses time and taxpayers money, he said. Republicans say they want to see the details of Obama’s proposal before commenting on it, and Obama may face resistance from the Republican-led House over the proposal in this election year.
