LOS ANGELES Japanese stocks moved slightly lower in early Tuesday trading, as investors returned from a three-day weekend to find the yen somewhat stronger, weighing on exporters. The Nikkei Stock Average traded down 0.1% at 8,717.84, with the Topix also off by 0.1%, as the dollar bought �78.84, its lowest level since early June and down from �79.27 on Friday. Among the blue-chip exporters, Sony Corp. dropped 1.3%, Sharp Corp. fell 1.8%, Canon Inc. gave up 2.2%, and Mazda Motor Corp. retreated 1.1%, although Toyota Motor Corp. managed to rise 0.2%, and Hitachi Ltd. added 0.4%. Utilities traded sharply lower, with Tokyo Electric Power Co. down 3.6% after a Nikkei news report that the government would cap its planned electricity-rate increase, while Hokkaido Electric Power Co. fell 3.4%, and Kansai Electric Power Co. tumbled 4.4%.
