LOS ANGELES Japan stocks sank in early Wednesday trading, after U.S. losses overnight and with energy shares reacting to an overnight drop in oil prices. The Nikkei Stock Average gave up 0.4% to 8,826.33, while the Topix also lost 0.4%. While Japanese oil stocks had gained Tuesday despite a drop in U.S. benchmark crude futures during the session, the shares peeled back their gains in early Wednesday action, with Inpex Corp. down 1.6%, Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. dropping 2.4%, and Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. losing 2.6%. A further drop from the euro against the yen to below 97.3 put pressure on some Europe-exposed names as well, with Sony Corp. down 1.8%, Mazda Motor Corp. dropping 2%, and Sharp Corp. falling 2.5% to extend Tuesday losses after announcing a special charge related to a legal settlement.
