LOS ANGELES Japan’s government plans to ease restrictions on U.S. beef imports, increasing the maximum age for animals whose meat is sold in the country to 30 months from 20 months currently, the Nikkei business daily said in an unsourced report Wednesday. Before Japan banned U.S. beef amid mad cow disease concerns in December 2003, the U.S. and Australia “pretty much split the Japanese market for imported beef,” the report said. While Japan allowed U.S. beef shipments to resume in December 2005, the U.S. enjoyed just 19% of market share in fiscal 2010 compared to 69% for Australia, according to the report. The move is a major concession to the U.S. and part of Japan’s participation in Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks, with President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials repeatedly urging Japan further open its beef, car and insurance markets, the Nikkei said.
