Five Career Killers to Avoid

Everybody knows that showing up on time, being a team player and working hard are keys to advancing a career to become an invaluable employee, but there are some not-so-obvious career killers that can work against you. In today’s feeble labor market, employees should steer clear of these five action that could detour your career track. Complacency A surefire way to ensure you never move up the corporate ladder is to become complacent in your job. Even if you are good at what you do, if you rarely go above and beyond what’s required, you’re likely to get passed over […]

Lighting Our Way at 14 Years Old

I don’t know if one can cultivate a fire in the belly. What I do know is I can spot one a mile away and I am compelled to engage. My coaching client list is dotted with people who are lit from within and it is my job to help them see that and honor it. Until a treasured college professor made mention of it when I sat in his office for some guidance, I never really identified that I had a fire in the belly burning brightly. “I don’t see this often,” he said. “This kind of determination to […]

Amazon.com (AMZN) plans to hire more than 50,000 seasonal workers this holiday season at U.S. fulfillment centers in an effort to outpace rivals and meet higher traffic during the key shopping period. The online retail giant said it expects to keep thousands on board in full-time positions. “Temporary associates play a critical role in meeting increased customer demand during the holiday season,” Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment, Dave Clark, said in a statement. Seattle-based Amazon employs more than 20,000 people across its 40 domestic fulfillment centers and pays full-time, permanent employees 30% more than workers in traditional brick-and-mortar […]

“So, do you have any questions for me?” This common refrain toward the close of a job interview can make even the best of us stammer when the tables are turned. But with the national unemployment rate around 8%, sharp interview skills are more important than ever. Whether or not you’re currently looking for a job, try your knowledge: Do you have the right questions to ask your interviewer? The goal, of course, is to ask a few smart questions – thoughtful ones that show you’ve been paying attention and have done your homework when it comes to researching the company, […]

Are you feeling picked on because you are older than your co-workers? Do you suspect you lost your job because you’re older — and because you made more money than younger workers? Age discrimination is a common complaint. A recent survey for AARP reported 64% of respondents thought that people older than 50 face age discrimination in the workplace. Some 34% said they had either personally faced age discrimination in the last four years or they know someone who has. The impact of age discrimination is more than just financial. “Older workers who think they are discriminated against are always […]

The Route to Hard Decisions

You are not wasting your time. You, the one who now thinks majoring in marketing was a mistake, the one who entered the industry at your parents’ urging because you’d always be able to find a job, the one who after 10 years realizes it’s not at all a job you want. You are not wasting your time. Now, please don’t read that as, “You should continue to work in this area you’re not thrilled about.” You should not, unless maybe you’re like Wallace Stevens. Yes, the poet who made such an impact in the 20th century that he’s now […]

No one expects you to happily spring out of bed every weekday and run off to work, but if you dread going to the office every time your alarm goes off, it’s time to make a change. Your passion for your job can wane over the years and moving on to a new job can help keep excitement from fading. But in this economy, landing a new job isn’t always possible. “Passion is a feeling—if you can recapture that and bring it back to the job, it’s a kick start,” says Nicole Williams, connection director at LinkedIn. Every day at […]

I was in the crosswalk in my pedestrian-friendly town making my way to the other side of the street the other day when I heard a car horn. I turned to the approaching car and said more loudly than I realized, “I hope to God you’re not beeping at me.” It was laced with what I call Jersey attitude. “Actually I’m not,” the young woman said simply as she drove by. So simply it disarmed me. Because it was only then I noticed that a parked car was poised to pull out into her path and she was using her […]

Jobs That Match Your Personality Do what you love, and success will follow. You’ve probably heard that old adage. But experts say it’s also important that the job loves you back. Though we’re born with distinct personalities, most of us aren’t aware of the traits that define us, says Paul Tieger, CEO of SpeedReading People in Hartford, Conn. Tieger has trained managers, team leaders, lawyers and others to size up people’s personality traits to better communicate with them. While most jobs match with a mix of personality characteristics, we asked experts to identify some specific traits that are particularly linked […]

What ‘Reality’ TV Should Be

I am watching Iyanla Vanzant helping an apparently well-known loose cannon from reality television drill down on her anger recently and suddenly I see the importance of what is happening on my screen. In this moment on her new show Iyanla, Fix My Life, Vanzant is actually drilling into the heart – maybe the underbelly — of reality TV by questioning behavior and raising an eyebrow on decorum. In the opening, as she tours Basketball Wives personality Evelyn Lozada’s stark white home and the camera pans over shoe after shoe in her vast closet, I notice something that doesn’t escape […]
